The New York Independent System Operator has reported that at 1pm on March 2nd the state set a new record for energy from wind power of 1,524 MW of output, which represents around 7% of the total usage at that time. NYISO President and CEO Stephen J Whitley said, "Wind power continues to grow as a power resource and the NYISO continues to optimize our electric system's use of renewable power".
Currently NY has 1,744 MW of installed wind capacity, with an additional 2000 MW of proposals being studied by the NYSISO. To put this in comparison, in 2005 NY had only 48 MW of installed wind capacity. In addition to transmission upgrades throughout the state this potential additional wind power capacity, which includes the proposed Lighthouse Wind project, will continue to demonstrate that New York can be a role model in renewable energy development for other states, particularly those in the Northeast.
